Google Ranking Checker — How to See Where Your Site Ranks

Not sure where your blog ranks on Google? This step-by-step guide shows you exactly how to check your Google rankings — for free — and what to do with that data.

Step 1: Set up Google Search Console

Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool from Google that shows you exactly how your site performs in Search. It's the most accurate source for ranking data because it comes directly from Google.

  1. Go to search.google.com/search-console
  2. Click "Add property" and enter your domain
  3. Verify ownership (via DNS, HTML file, or Google Analytics)
  4. Wait 24–48 hours for data to appear (new sites take longer)
  5. Navigate to Performance → Search results

Step 2: Find your keyword rankings in GSC

Once you're in the Performance report:

  1. Check the "Average position" box at the top
  2. Click "Queries" tab to see which keywords bring you traffic
  3. Sort by "Position" to find your highest-ranking keywords
  4. Click any page in the "Pages" tab to see only keywords for that post

Pro tip: Filter by queries with position 4–20 — these are your "quick win" keywords. They're already on or near page 1, and a content update can push them into the top 3.

Step 3: Use a rank tracker for daily precision

GSC is excellent but has limitations — it shows averages over time, not your exact position today. For precise daily tracking:

What your Google rankings tell you

Rankings rising steadily

Your SEO is working. Keep publishing, keep building links.

Rankings dropping suddenly

Likely a Google algorithm update or a competitor gained links. Check Google's update history.

Stuck on page 2 (positions 11–20)

You need more backlinks, better content depth, or a stronger internal linking structure.

High impressions, low CTR

You're ranking but users aren't clicking. Rewrite your title and meta description.
